"Life didn't begin in Barbados, it was just perfected here"
October 2011

Hello again from the Vintage Hockey office in Auckland, New Zealand. I should also add a big Hola, Bonjour, Gutten Tag and Dia Dhuit to some of our international friends from all over the world.

Although it's all about hockey here at the Vintage Hockey offices, we can't help but be caught up in the Rugby World Cup as rugby mania has taken over New Zealand. Good luck to the remaining teams!

TOP STORIES

Recap - What is Vintage Hockey?

Vintage Hockey is the latest sport to join the growing Vintage Sports Movement that already includes rugby, cricket, softball, golf and football. Vintage Sports Carnivals are designed for players of all abilities, agilities and experience, over 35 years of age.

And if playing the sport you love isn't enough, carnivals are staged in attractive destinations where the chosen sport, in this case hockey, has a significant presence.

In summary, a Carnival can be the ultimate experience for an avid mature sportsperson (over 35 years of age) who whilst never reaching representative status can now ‘compete' against and relax in the company of similar aged people from all over the world - every 2 years!

Barbados Life Lessons - Long Live Life

Check out this great clip the Barbados Tourism Board put together. "Life didn't begin in Barbados, it was just perfected here".

Barbados in October

Although October is a month where temperatures begin to drop and fall-like weather sets in around the globe, vacationers will find beautiful summer weather conditions continuing in Barbados. Temperatures remain in the mid-80s (35 degrees celsius) and the amount of rainfall decreases creating pleasant conditions for all who visit.

Say Hola to the 'Almost' hockey team from Uruguay.

According to Mariana Suarez of the 'Almost' hockey team, 'Almost' are the first team of veterans in Uruguay. They were founded in Montevideo in 1999 by former players from different clubs who wanted to keep on playing hockey.

Their age group ranges from 35 to 60 and it's a women-only team, no men! Mariana, says there are no male veterans in Uruguay yet!

"We are not a formal club, just a group of former players that got together and have managed to stay as a team for 12 years now!" says Mariana.

'Almost' told Vintage Hockey that for about 10 years 'Almost' were the only team of veterans in Uruguay and had to play in leagues against much younger players, which they still do, although now there are other teams of similar ages.

Nearly every year 'Almost' travel to Argentina to play regional tournaments or Sevens against other veterans.

The Kensington Oval - one of the major sporting facilities on the island.

Although the Kensington Oval is best known as a cricket ground, it has also hosted many non-cricket events including hockey. The stadium underwent massive renovations in 2007 in the lead up to the 2007 Cricket World Cup at an estimated US$45 million cost. The ground has a jumbo TV screen and also a jacuzzi type area to relax in while watching matches - who could say no to that?
